    Residential solar air conditioning: Energy and Exergy analyses of an ammonia-water absorption cooling system

    Large scale heat-driven absorption cooling systems are available in the marketplace for industrial applications but the concept of a solar driven absorption chiller for air-conditioning applications is relatively new. Absorption chillers have a lower efficiency than compression refrigeration systems, when used for small scale applications and this restrains the absorption cooling system from air conditioning applications in residential buildings. The potential of a solar driven ammonia-water absorption chiller for residential air conditioning application is discussed and analyzed in this paper. A thermodynamic model has been developed based on a 10 kW air cooled ammonia-water absorption chiller driven by solar thermal energy. Both energy and exergy analyses have been conducted to evaluate the performance of this residential scale cooling system. The analyses uncovered that the absorber is where the most exergy loss occurs (63%) followed by the generator (13%) and the condenser (11%). Furthermore, the exergy loss of the condenser and absorber greatly increase with temperature, the generator less so, and the exergy loss in the evaporator is the least sensitive to increasing temperature

    Women\u27s Experience of Infertility: A Multi-systemic Perspective

    This article describes a study that used a multi-system perspective to document the self-reported experience of women struggling with infertility and its treatment. A sub-sample of 56 participants from a parent study that examined posttraumatic growth in the context of infertility was used based on their answers to a single open-ended question about their infertility experience, which was included in the original questionnaire. Inclusion criteria were self-identified failure to achieve a pregnancy or carry it to term after at least one year of trying in the six years prior to the study and absence of a recent crisis unrelated to the infertility. Responses were content analyzed independently by a team of three researchers. The analysis yielded agreed upon 85 codes clustered in six themes: Challenges, perception of the experience, reactions, support, coping strategies and posttraumatic growth. The main overall finding points to the sense of being “trapped” in a web of multi-faceted, environmental and internal relationships between diverse systems involved in the infertility treatment. Implications for practice are identified and directions for future research suggested

    Energy efficiency and economic feasibility of an absorption air-conditioning system using wet, dry and hybrid heat rejection methods

    In tropical and sub-tropical regions, air-conditioning systems account for the greatest electricity consumption and high water use. Solar-driven absorption cooling systems can conveniently reduce electricity consumption at need. The performance of this cooling system depends on the system’s heat rejection. A simulation was performed for a 15 kW single effect ammonia-water absorption cooling system driven by low temperature thermal energy and with three different heat rejection methods (wet cooling, dry cooling, and hybrid cooling). This hybrid cooling system uses wet cooling on the absorber and dry cooling on the condenser. The system performance and economics of the chiller with these cooling methods were evaluated. The analysis showed that a wet cooling system has a higher system performance and water consumption compared to a dry cooling system, which has a high primary energy consumption with no water usage. In hot weather conditions and where there is scarcity of water, hybrid cooling can consume on average 41% less electrical energy than dry cooling and 49% less water than wet cooling and the payback period compared to a wet cooling system can be less than three years

    Bubble-pump-driven LiBr-H2O and LiCl-H2O Absorption Air-Conditioning Systems

    A thermally-driven bubble pump, powered by solar or waste heat energy, is a simple and efficient technique for lifting a liquid from lower to higher levels, after which it can flow by gravity. In this study, solar thermal driven pumps were incorporated in the solar collector as well as in the refrigerant cycle to provide a design of an air-conditioning system for a residential home that is independent of grid electricity. The crystallization challenge, low pressure, and low efficiency are the main downsides of bubble-pump-driven LiBr-H2O refrigeration systems, in comparison with other bubble-pump-driven diffusion absorption refrigeration systems. Therefore, a complete thermodynamic analysis of each component is necessary to improve the system performance. In this research, a thermodynamic model was developed, introducing a new absorbent-refrigerant pair (LiCl-H2O) and comparing it with LiBr-H2O, in a bubble pump operated absorption chiller driven by solar thermal energy. Under the same operating condition, the highest cooling effect and the performance of the LiCl-H2O system are 49 W and COP=0.56 compared to 34 W and COP=0.46 for a LiBr-H2O system

    High-frequency urban measurements of molecular hydrogen and carbon monoxide in the United Kingdom

    High-frequency measurements of atmospheric molecular hydrogen (H<sub>2</sub>) and carbon monoxide (CO) were made at an urban site in the United Kingdom (UK) from mid-December, 2008 until early March, 2009. Very few measurements of H<sub>2</sub> exist in the urban environment, particularly within the UK, but are an essential component in the assessment of anthropogenic emissions of H<sub>2</sub> and to a certain extent CO. These data provide detailed information on urban time-series, diurnal cycles as well as sources and sinks of both H<sub>2</sub> and CO at urban locations. High-frequency data were found to be strongly influenced by local meteorological conditions of wind speed and temperature. Diurnal cycles were found to follow transport frequency very closely due to the sites proximity to major carriageways, consequently a strong correlation was found between H<sub>2</sub> and CO mole fractions. Background subtracted mean and rush hour molar H<sub>2</sub>/CO emission ratios of 0.53±0.08 and 0.57±0.06 respectively, were calculated from linear fitting of data. The scatter plot of all H<sub>2</sub> and CO data displayed an unusual two population pattern, thought to be associated with a large industrial area 85 km to the west of the site. However, the definitive source of this two branch pattern could not be fully elucidated. H<sub>2</sub> emissions from transport in the UK were estimated to be 188±39 Gg H<sub>2</sub>/yr, with 8.1±2.3 Tg/yr of H<sub>2</sub> produced from vehicle emissions globally. H<sub>2</sub> and CO deposition velocities were calculated during stable night-time inversion events when a clear decay of both species was observed. CO was found to have a much higher deposition velocity than H<sub>2</sub>, 1.3±0.8×10<sup>−3</sup> and 2.2±1.5×10<sup>−4</sup> m s<sup>−1</sup> (1σ) respectively, going against the law of molecular diffusivity. The source of this unusual result was investigated, however no conclusive explanation was found for increased loss of CO over H<sub>2</sub> during stable night time inversion events

    Palaeoecological Implications of Archaeological Seal Bone Assemblages: Case Studies from Labrador and Baffin Island

    In recent years, increasing scientific attention has been paid to sea mammals as biological indicators of Arctic environmental change. The usefulness of animals such as ringed seal (Phoca hispida), harp seal (Phoca groenlandica), bearded seal (Erignathus barbatus), and harbour seal (Phoca vitulina) as indicator species is due to the close relationship of their range, reproductive cycles, and life histories to sea ice. The behaviour and distribution of these species correlate with ice conditions in the areas where the animals are encountered. The proportions of seal species represented in archaeological deposits may therefore reflect, at least in part, environmental conditions characterizing past seascapes. This paper examines zooarchaeological data from several Thule and historic Inuit archaeological sites in Baffin Island and Labrador, sites occupied during the last 700 years, to determine whether regional relationships can be demonstrated between subsistence economies, seal populations, and sea ice conditions. Ratios of ringed seal, harbour seal, bearded seal, and walrus (Odobenus rosmarus) bone frequencies from several archaeological sites are analyzed and discussed in light of new high-resolution proxy sea ice and regional palaeoenvironmental data. This exploratory study suggests that characteristics in seal species composition reflected in these assemblages can, in some circumstances, be correlated with recent sea ice reconstructions. However, a regional comparison of a larger number of more precisely dated archaeological sites is required for a full examination of these relationships. Au cours des dernières années, on a porté de plus en plus d'attention scientifique aux mammifères marins en tant qu'indicateurs biologiques du changement global dans l'Arctique. L'utilité d'animaux tels que le phoque annelé (Phoca hispida), le phoque du Groenland (Phoca groenlandica), le phoque barbu (Erignathus barbatus) et le phoque commun (Phoca vitulina) comme espèces indicatrices est due au rapport étroit que leurs aires de distribution, leurs cycles de reproduction et leurs cycles de vie ont avec la glace marine. Le comportement et la distribution de ces espèces sont corrélés avec les conditions de la glace dans les zones où l'on rencontre ces animaux. Les proportions des espèces de phoques qui se trouvent dans les dépôts archéologiques pourraient donc refléter, du moins partiellement, les conditions environnementales qui caractérisaient les paysages marins du passé. Cet article se penche sur les données zooarchéologiques provenant de plusieurs sites archéologiques Thulé et inuits dans l'île Baffin et le Labrador, sites occupés au cours des 700 dernières années, pour déterminer si l'on peut démontrer l'existence de rapports régionaux entre les économies de subsistance, les populations de phoques et les conditions de glace marine. Des taux de fréquence d'os de phoque annelé, de phoque commun, de phoque barbu et de morse provenant de plusieurs sites archéologiques font l'objet d'une analyse et d'une discussion à la lumière de nouvelles données indirectes à haute résolution sur la glace marine et sur le paléoenvironnement régional. Cette étude préliminaire suggère que les caractéristiques présentes dans la composition des espèces de phoques reflétée dans ces assemblages peuvent, dans certaines conditions, être corrélées aux reconstructions récentes de la glace marine.     Applying theories of health behaviour and change to hearing health research: time for a new approach

    Objective: In recent years, there has been an increase in the application of behavioural models, such as social cognition models, to the promotion of hearing health. Despite this, there exists a well-developed body of literature that suggests such models may fail to consistently explain reliable amounts of variability in human behaviours. Design: This paper provides a summary of this research across selected models of health-related behaviour, outlining the current state of the evidence. Results: Recent work in the field of behaviour change is presented together with commentary on the design and reporting of behaviour change interventions. Conclusions: We propose that attempts to use unreliable models to explain and predict hearing health behaviours should now be replaced by work which integrates the latest in behaviour change science, such as the Behaviour Change Wheel and Theoretical Domains Framework

    Seeding the Galactic Centre gas stream: gravitational instabilities set the initial conditions for the formation of protocluster clouds

    Star formation within the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) may be intimately linked to the orbital dynamics of the gas. Recent models suggest that star formation within the dust ridge molecular clouds (from G0.253+0.016 to Sgr B2) follows an evolutionary time sequence, triggered by tidal compression during their preceding pericentre passage. Given that these clouds are the most likely precursors to a generation of massive stars and extreme star clusters, this scenario would have profound implications for constraining the time-evolution of star formation. In this Letter, we search for the initial conditions of the protocluster clouds, focusing on the kinematics of gas situated upstream from pericentre. We observe a highly-regular corrugated velocity field in {l,vLSR}\{l,\,v_{\rm LSR}\} space, with amplitude and wavelength A=3.7±0.1A=3.7\,\pm\,0.1 kms1^{-1} and λvel,i=22.5±0.1\lambda_{\rm vel, i}=22.5\,\pm\,0.1 pc, respectively. The extremes in velocity correlate with a series of massive (104\sim10^{4}M_{\odot}) and compact (Req2R_{\rm eq}\sim2 pc), quasi-regularly spaced (8\sim8 pc), molecular clouds. The corrugation wavelength and cloud separation closely agree with the predicted Toomre (17\sim17 pc) and Jeans (6\sim6 pc) lengths, respectively. We conclude that gravitational instabilities are driving the condensation of molecular clouds within the Galactic Centre gas stream. Furthermore, we speculate these seeds are the historical analogue of the dust-ridge molecular clouds, representing the initial conditions of star and cluster formation in the CMZ

    Advanced Exergy Analysis Of Licl-H2O Absorption Air Conditioning System

    Increasing energy demand for air conditioning due to climate change is posing a continuous threat to the environment. Absorption air-conditioning systems driven by solar thermal or waste heat energy are an alternative for providing cooling comfort in a sustainable manner. The crystallization problem of high performance LiBr-H2O absorption cooling system hinders its small-scale applications. In this study, the potential of a 10 kW LiCl-H2O absorption refrigeration system is discussed and analyzed. The new concept of advanced exergy analysis is coupled with conventional thermodynamic analyses, which provides the available potential of each component for overall system performance improvement. The analyses uncovered that only 45% of the total exergy loss is due to each component’s own internal irreversibilities, whereas the remaining is through the interaction of the irreversibilities of other components in the system. The analyses also reveal that 43% of the total exergy loss is unavoidable and 57% can be reduced by improving the overall system efficiency
